Right now.
My family is in from out of town. My parents are asleep in my guest room. My sister, who I almost never get to see, is asleep in my home office. My dog is probably curled up with my dad, happy as she can be because he’s her favorite human.
We had a wonderful dinner tonight. My wife and I cooked. I grilled steaks and she made the sides. Dad told stories. Sister laughed. Mom rolled her eyes. Wife listened and smiled with unbridled joy; she didn’t have this growing up.
We watched a fantastic movie. Ate ice cream. We took a walk at sunset around my neighborhood. I threw a football with my dad for a few minutes. Tomorrow, I get to see my grandparents and the rest of my extended family.
My wife is asleep next to me. She’s pregnant with our first child. A girl. Doctor says she’s developed enough to hear now. She heard her grandfather’s roaring laughter tonight, a sound she’ll be all too familiar with before too long.
I don’t have a large bank account. I don’t have a big house. We live a modest life. But we are rich in blessings and love. And in this tiny moment tonight, I am thankful and happy.
